ABOUT ME

Personal Profile

I was introduced to making my own videos back in middle school, and since I began, I haven’t stopped. I spent all of my high school years making various videos in my free time and entering them into all the local festivals I could. I was lucky to be surrounded by so many friends who both loved acting or film and were willing to let me force them to stand in the cold for endless hours so I could get the perfect shot – which if you asked my friends now, has not changed at all. I remember the first time one of my films was selected in a film fest and I was able to watch it on a large theater screen. I was by far the youngest filmmaker there, and I may not have won any major awards, but simply having the opportunity to experience what it was like to sit in a theater and see others watch my art was unforgettable.

Now I’m in my Junior year of college at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. My major, not surprisingly, is Film and my minor is Journalism and Media Studies. While the tools and knowledge I have about making films has changed immensely, my original love for film and the kinds of stories I like to tell in my work hasn’t changed much. I create a lot of work that draws directly from my own personal life and experiences. When asked what kind of films I like to make I typically respond with “female coming of age stories.” I love delving into relationships, whether platonic, familial or romantic, and often focus on female relationships, as it’s what I have the most personal experience with and love for. One of my favorite filmmakers is Greta Gerwig, as her films often emulate the most important aspects of what I want my films to be.

Visually my work is often darker, taking place outdoors and at night – which can often be a challenge when filming in a place such as Wisconsin, with the long and brutal winters. I also greatly enjoy the look of film, whether achieved by shooting 35mm pictures, 16mm film or through the use of digital techniques to create a nostalgic, film like feel. To me there is something beautiful about the past and nostalgia that I love to capture on screen.

I began making films as an outlet for my creativity and writing. I then grew to love my ability to tell stories through a medium that encompasses almost all of the senses. Now, all of that is still true, and I have also grown to love many more of the technical aspects of filming that I was never quite as aware of before. From cinematography and lighting, which has become my most recent obsession as I began to learn more and more about it, to the art department, where I have spent most of my college time working in. I still have so much to learn and explore when it comes to the film industry, and I look forward to using this last year and a half of college to learn as much of it as I can before heading out into the workforce. The thing I love most about film is, well, all of it. No matter what I am doing, whether writing, working in the art department, lighting or directing, I love it all. Which simply gives me hope, knowing that no matter where I end up, as long as I get to help make films and stories come to life, I will always be satisfied.
